Tuesday February 2, 2010 New Beginnings
Happy New Year and welcome to the first e-newsletter for 2010 .....….. a New Year ……. a new beginning.
Chinese Astrology: Year of the Tiger Numerology: Year 3
For many of us, 2009 proved to be a very challenging year. In numerology, it was a number 11 year – a year of spiritual growth, of creating peace and harmony in personal relationships and, globally, a time of learning to share resources to achieve stability, as well as a sense of understanding that we are all custodians of this planet.
Well, the financial world certainly was forced to take notice - whether we have learnt anything about ‘sharing resources’, or not, remains to be seen. On a personal note, being an 11 life path in an 11 year, I was faced with some physical, emotional and relationship challenges. I welcome 2010 with open arms!!
2010 is a Number 3 Year in Numerology – a year of fostering friendships, having fun and full of optimism! It’s an opportunity to live life fully. Communication and creativity are also important this year, so we should be careful with the words we use and the intentions we make – the decisions we make personally and globally will have a huge impact on our future.
In Chinese Astrology it is the Year of the Tiger, which brings lots of opportunities. Be ready to pounce on any new opportunity that comes your way or you may miss out. Like the Year 3, Year of the Tiger is full of excitement and good fortune - not a time to be a lazy tiger, however, take time to rest, observe and take note, grasping each new adventure as it comes.
So let’s make a new beginning in 2010 by taking time to carefully state our intention for personal growth and, as a result, may we all view the world through new eyes full of heart-filled love for all humankind. To learn more about making New Year resolutions or sankalpa, read the articles below.
Also, in this issue I’ll be introducing colour therapy and how it relates to the chakra system. I hope you enjoy this introductory journey into the subtle anatomy of the body – a new chakra and colour will be visited each issue.
Wishing you all Peace, Love & Light in 2010

Back to top New Year Resolutions
We have all made New Year resolutions at some stage, but do we keep them? Perhaps taking smaller steps in the form of daily intentions or affirmations may be more achievable.
The practice of sankalpa is like making a New Year’s resolution.
Sankalpa is a Sanskrit work meaning thought, intention or will, directed toward a specific outcome. It is resolve or resolution used in yoga and meditation on a regular, preferably daily basis. It helps to re-program the mind into positive thinking.
Dr Swami Shankardevananda says: “Sankalpa or resolve is an affirmation which you make to overcome any weakness affecting your body, performance and life, and to awaken any other strength you may feel is necessary to provide you with internal balance.” Read more ……
So before you make your New Year resolutions, or sankalpa, take some quiet time to reflect on the year that has passed and ask yourself ‘what is it I need to bring into balance in my life?’. Then, write down your resolve and say it every day, review your goals regularly and then take the next step forward.
If you’re short of ideas of what you can do to improve your health and quality of life this year, here are some suggestions:
- Reduce one unhealthy food from your diet – soft drinks, coffee, chocolate or ice cream
- Phone or meet up with a friend you haven’t contacted for a while
- Go for a relaxing walk in the fresh air once a day
- Spend some time in silence each day - no phone, TV or radio
- Start a gratitude diary – write the things you are grateful for each day
- Once a month, visit a place you have never been to before
- Smile - even on the phone

Back to top Wedding Bush Essence
“This Essence is excellent for commitment, whether in relationships, employment, the family or personal goals. It can be of great benefit for a relationship when one or both individuals are uncertain if they wish to work through the issues their partner is bringing up in them. Wedding Bush can also be used for people who flit from one relationship to another or for when the initial attraction in the relationship diminishes.”

Back to top Bowen Brings Balance
Still recovering from the over-indulgence of Christmas and the New Year? Having a few Bowen sessions could help bring your body back into balance by gently detoxifying the body and relaxing the nervous system.
Bowen Technique or Bowtech, as it is known, is a gentle form of body work in which very subtle moves over soft tissue or fascia, stimulate specific receptors that enable the body to correct dysfunctions and restore homeostasis (balance) within the body.
The technique not only addresses the musculoskeletal framework, but also the fascia, nerves and internal organs. The body’s biofeedback response improves circulation and lymphatic drainage and aids in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins. Read more....
Testimonial:
“I have found that Bowen often helps the not so obvious complaints. For example, I have coeliac disease and I had an associated skin condition that is often part of the disease. Without me even realising it straight away, the skin condition was completely eradicated by Bowen sessions with Maree.” - JS Lansley, Quakers Hill

Back to top Beat Disease with Vit D
Vitamin D is critically important for the development, growth and maintenance of a healthy body, from birth until death. It is obtained from sun exposure, some foods or supplements.
In my opinion, we’ve become paranoid about exposing our bodies to sunlight, (myself included) due to the scaremongering tactics used in advertising. It’s true that we shouldn’t get burnt in the sun, but we are only told part of the story.
According to research in the Archives of Internal Medicine (168:15), failing to get sufficient vitamin D (from sunlight or supplementation) translates overall to a 26 per cent increased risk of death from any cause, including heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis and depression.
A few minutes of daily sunlight can help your body make vitamin D; eating more D-rich foods - dairy, cold-water fish like salmon, fortified cereals and orange juice - will help, too. The latest research states that 15 minutes of sunshine each day in summer on 25% of your body (without sunscreen) is necessary for our health and 30 minutes in the winter months. (Of course, this varies according to where you live.)
Over-exposure to sunlight is damaging and prematurely ages the skin. Sunburn can definitely trigger mutation of cancer cells in the body, but regular controlled exposure to the sunlight can help prevent disease in the body. So if you plan on being outdoors for more than 30 minutes, wear a hat, cover up or use a natural sunscreen, otherwise, enjoy your dose of Vitamin D each day!

Back to top The Base Chakra
Each month I will be focussing on one of the chakras and its associated colour. The Base Chakra and the colour red will be the focus this month.
What are the Chakras?
The word ‘chakra’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘spinning wheel’ or vortex of energy. There are 7 major chakras in the body and hundreds of smaller secondary chakras. The smaller points are often called meridians which are used in acupuncture and are associated with physicality while the seven major chakras are associated with emotions and spirituality.
The chakras each have a corresponding gland and if they become devitalised or out of balance, disharmony or disease may result in the body. Balance can be regained with therapies such as: meditation, aromatherapy, flower essences, colour therapy etc.
Colour Therapy
"Colour can transform our environment and increase our productivity. It can enhance our social life and improve our state of health.”
‘ Colour Your Life’ by Howard and Dorathy Sun
RED is associated with motivation, extraversion, stimulation, activity and will. Hence, the red jacket for power dressing. It brings new life and new beginnings. A good colour for the start of a new year! Red is associated with physical love and passion – we give red roses as a symbol of deep love. It can stimulate all appetites! Many restaurants use red in their décor. On the negative side it can symbolize anger, danger, revolt etc.
The Base Chakra is associated with the colour red and is concerned with issues of survival and basic physical needs. It is powerful (or it feels powerful) because the energy here is in raw form and is closest to the density of the physical body. Its life lesson is “standing up for oneself”. The corresponding gland is the Adrenals – the gland associated with the ‘fight or flight’.
A misaligned Base Chakra can cause: sexual or reproductive problems, circulation and blood deficiencies, osteoporosis, constipation, bladder problems and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Emotional dysfunctions of the Base Chakra include: fear, obsessive/compulsive behaviour, protective instincts, mental lethargy, ‘spiciness’, lack of inner stillness.
